ADRI contributed to forest recovery by implementing community nurseries, foresting and reforesting 360 hectares of land, and by engaging community members (community and/or individual landowners). For this activity, the Program worked together with different government entities, such as MAGA, INAB, and the Municipality of Tucurú to share strategies and resources to reach the proposed goal.
In most communities of Alta Verapaz, forests have been disappearing as a result of immoderate felling, forest fires, or the expansion of the agricultural frontier in areas highly suited for forestry activities. This severely affects the environment, increases global warming, dries up water sources, and increases the proliferation of bacteria and disease which not only affect crops, but also cause skin conditions in humans. Therefore, ADRI has been working to develop forestry and reforestation alternatives in watershed areas, to create conditions conducive to favorable weather and increased rainfall.
In partnership with Heifer International, 220 hectares have been reforested and 23 families have been benefited through a Government Forestry Incentive Program.
